I agree that 360 lacks originality (even though it came out first lol), but it definitely has a demographic. Online gamers.
I'd much rather play GTA IV, Call of Duty, etc on XBox Live over the Playstation Network any day of the week.
The exclusives Halo and Gears of War are all about being played online.
The lag I get on LittleBigPlanet is sad but it's free so I dont complain.

The answer to that is pretty simple. You get what you pay for. The $50 a year one spends on Xbox Live goes so much farther than the free service of the Playstation Network.
